The condition of Indian death row prisoner Sarabjit Singh, who is in an intensive care unit in a Pakistan hospital, remains "serious and critical", the Indian external affairs ministry said Wednesday night.

The information was given in a late night tweet posted by ministry spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin: "Sarabjit Singh's medical situation remains 'serious and critical' as per update provided to Indian officials in Lahore at 10pm local time."

Earlier in the day, Pakistan acceded to India's request for daily consular access to Sarabjit Singh, who is under treatment in Lahore's Jinnah Hospital after being brutally assaulted by fellow prisoners last week in the city's Kot Lakhpat jail.

Sarabjit, 49, suffered critical head injuries in the unprovoked and sudden assault by four to five prisoners April 26. He has been on ventilator life support since.

India Wednesday made a fervent appeal to Pakistan to release Sarabjit Singh or at least to shift him to a third country for "proper treatment".
