The Supreme Court on Tuesday extended, till July 3, the interim protection from arrest to Karti Chidambaram, son of senior Congress leader P. Chidambaram, by the ED in the alleged INX Media money laundering case.
The court extended the interim relief as it adjourned the hearing on the matter.
The top court on April 2 extended till April 17 (Tuesday) the Delhi High Court's interim order of March 9 directing the Enforcement Directorate (ED) not to take any coercive action against him till March 20.
The top court bench of Chief Justice Dipak Misra, Justice A.M. Khanwilkar and Justice D.Y. Chandrachud on March 15 extended the relief to Karti Chidambram till March 26 while transferring to itself the cases pending before the Delhi High Court relating to adjudication of ED's power to arrest an accused under Section 19 of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act.
It embarked on examining the issue as it noted that several high courts in the country have given conflicting views on its interpretation.
