A Uttar Pradesh-based lawyer on Wednesday moved the Supreme Court against the demonetisation of Rs 500 and Rs 1000 denomination currency notes and describing it a "draconian decision".

Describing the government's decision as a "Tughlaki Farman", the petitioner, advocate Sangam Lal Pandey, in his plea has pointed to practical difficulties being faced by different sections of society including farmers and patients in hospitals.

Seeking the quashing of the decision, he noted that private hospitals, medical shops, public and private transport including the Delhi Metro are refusing to accept Rs 500 and Rs 1000 currency notes.

A number of people who have withdrawn large amount of sums for the marriage of their sons and daughtesr are now in jeopardy as the same cannot be utilised for the intended purposes, he said, adding thousands of marriages are slated to take place November 9-11 but are now in difficulty because of the government's decision.
