A school bus on Friday mowed down a Class 9 girl student of another school here and fell partially into a ditch, injuring a dozen of the students it was ferrying, police said.

The incident occurred when the driver lost control over the bus at a culvert near Tigaon and crushed 15-year-old Kajal of Shanti Shiksha Niketan Tigaon who was walking to her school, the police said.

The driver fled the accident site without informing anyone that he had killed the girl. The bus was carrying nearly 50 students to school.

Vishal, 9, Kajal's nephew who was in the bus, told his parents that she was dead.

"The body was recovered a few hours after the incident when the bus was removed from the spot," police officer Rajdeep Mor told IANS.
