Serbia's national women's volleyball team earned its first-ever gold medal after defeating Italy 3-2 in five sets (21-25, 25-14, 23-25, 25-19, 15-12) here at the 2018 FIVB Women's Volleyball World Championship.

The two teams went back and forth until Serbia clinched the decisive fifth set in the first all-European final since the current format was applied in 1978, reports Efe.

"It is the very first time that Serbia climbs to the peak of international volleyball, confirming their world dominance in conjunction with their silver medal two years ago at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games," the FIVB said on its website.

Earlier Saturday, China claimed a consolation bronze medal over the Netherlands, winning 3-0 in three sets (22-25, 19-25, 14-25).

"It is three-time world champion China's sixth medal in the history of the competition, but only the first ever bronze after three gold and two silver," FIVB explained.
