The highest temporal seat of the Sikh religion, the Akal Takht, Monday opposed the move by the Haryana government to allow a separate committee to manage gurdwaras in the state.

Akal Takht jathedar Gurbachan Singh said the move to allow a separate committee for Haryana was a "conspiracy" by the Congress government in Haryana led by Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda.

The chief minister had Sunday announced the setting up of a separate Sikh committee for Haryana's gurdwaras.

He had said the necessary legislation for this would be brought in the monsoon session of the Haryana assembly starting July 11.

Cautioning Sikhs in Haryana against the move for a separate committee in the state, the Akal Takht chief urged Sikhs in Haryana to rise against the move.

With the latest move by the Haryana government, the Amritsar-based SGPC, which controls gurdwaras in Punjab, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh, will lose control over 72 gurdwaras in Haryana.

The SGPC has called the move illegal and unconstitutional.
