Congress leader Shakeel Ahmad Sunday took a jibe at Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Rajnath Singh saying that in the US guardians are allowed to apply for visas only for minors.
"I'm in Canada, near US. Rajnath Singh-ji should have been informed that in US guardians are allowed to apply for visa only for minors," Ahmad tweeted.
The Congress leader was referring to the BJP chief, during his visit to the US earlier this month, reportedly urging the government there to issue a visa to Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi.
The BJP retorted by saying Ahmad could be a "liaison officer" for the US visa department.
"Shakeel Ahmad should become a liaison officer in the US visa department. He should leave the Congress party," BJP leader Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi said Sunday.
"Is US visa a certificate of secularism or is it a certificate of your performance? It has become a joke now," he added.
Modi, who heads the BJP's election campaign committee for the 2014 Lok Sabha polls, was denied a US visa in 2005 for his alleged role in or inaction during the 2002 Godhra riots. He has never applied again.
