The Border Security Force (BSF) has seized smuggled silver ornaments worth Rs 2.27 lakh from West Bengal's Nadia district, an official said on Saturday.
Acting on a tip off, the BSF troopers conducted an ambush near border outpost Kadipur in Nadia district's Krishnanagar and managed to seize around 5.4 kgs of silver ornaments from being smuggled from India to Bangladesh at around 7 p.m. on Friday.
"The special ambush party of BSF challenged a group of five or six Bangladeshi smugglers when they were trying to collect a package from the Indian side of the border fence and seized four packets of silver balls, chain, bracelets etc," Prabhat Kumar Singh, Deputy Inspector General of BSF's south Bengal frontier said in a statement.
"None of the smugglers could be caught as they managed to run away to Bangladesh, taking advantage of the darkness," he said.
The south Bengal frontier of the BSF has seized 96.75 kgs of silver ornaments worth Rs 36.5 lakh and apprehended three silver smugglers so far in 2018.
