The Income Tax Department on Tuesday said an "inquiry notice" was sent to Congress leader Abhishek Manu Singhvi's wife Anita who had allegedly bought diamonds and jewellery worth Rs 6.5 crore from a store owned by fugitive Nirav Modi.
"An inquiry notice has been served to Anita Singhvi for the alleged transactions worth Rs 6.5 crore with Nirav Modi," an IT Department official told IANS.
Nirav Modi is a fugitive billionaire accused of Rs 11,300 crore fraud committed at Punjab National Bank.
The official denied to state how much time the department has given to Anita to file a reply.
Singhvi, however, denied the allegation and said his wife had bought jewellery worth Rs 1.5 crore and paid the amount through cheque.
"All Rs 1.56 crore paid for fully in cheque and accounted for with receipts by India's highest taxpayer," he said.
