Six arrested for duping elderly in Delhi

The Delhi Police on Saturday arrested six people of duping the elderly across the country by promising them bonuses on existing insurance policies.

Accused Daljeet Singh, 33, Gurpreet Singh, 33, Umang Kumar, 30, Sunil Kumar, 30, Suraj Dubey, 23, and Mohit Batra, 25, had floated a company and set up a call centre for committing the crime, said Deputy Commissioner of Police (East) Bhairon Singh Gurjar.

Two more accused, including a woman, were still absconding, said the official.

The gang's activities came to light after a retired government schoolteacher got a case registered on October 5 after he was duped of Rs.34.29 lakh.

A special team raided several locations and arrested the six accused from east Delhi's Laxmi Nagar area following a tip-off.

During interrogation, they told the police that they collected personal and bank account and insurance policy details and the like from data vendors.

Later, posing as senior finance ministry officials, the gang members gained the trust of their intended victims, police said.

They lured people with promises of bonuses on insurance policies and asked them to deposit money under various expense heads.

As many as 15 mobile phones and 21 landline telephones used for tele-calling, and several incriminating documents have been seized from their possession, police said.
