Six pilgrims were killed and four injured when an overcrowded jeep rolled into a 200-feet deep gorge in Chamba district in Himachal Pradesh on Friday, police said.

The victims were going to the Manimahesh lake in the Bharmour Valley, sacred to Lord Shiva.

The accident occurred near Dughli rivulet, some 20 km from district headquarters Chamba.

The deceased, all in the age group of 25 to 30 years, have been identified as Pankaj Baloria, Jaswant Singh, Abhinesh, Samsher Singh, Anil Kumar and Sonu, all residents of a village in Nagrota Bagwan in Kangra district.

Deputy Superintendent of Police Vir Bahadur told reporters that the driver probably lost control over the vehicle while allowing a bus coming from the opposite side to pass. The jeep skidded off the road and fell into the gorge.

He said most of the injured were admitted to a hospital in Chamba town.
