Slovenia's leading bank chief Janko Medja was detained by the country's national bureau of investigation authorities Friday.

Medja, the chairman of Nova Ljubljanska Banka (NLB) was allegedly involved the purchase of stock of Slovenia's largest retailer Mercator prior to the disclosure of a takeover bid, Xinhua reported.

Medja, however, denied charges of insider trading. "Any suspicion connected to my conduct ... is unfounded," he told media after being released from custody.

Meanwhile, NLB chief supervisor France Arhar was also under investigation for insider trading and corruption when Medja was a management board member at Unicredit banka Slovenija.

Arhar was chairman of Unicredit Banka Slovenija in 2003 to 2012. He served as the governor of the Slovenian central bank between 1991 and 2001, and became NLB's chief supervisor in June this year.
