A person arrested on charges of smuggling in Jammu district was killed as policemen escorting him resorted to firing at him when he reportedly tried to escape, police said.

Identifying him as Tarseem Lal, 25, son of Shamsher Bhagat, resident of Chinor (Jammu), police said he was one of the three people arrested on Saturday in Akhnoor area of the district on charges of smuggling.

"Tarsem was being shifted along with the other two people when he attempted to escape," said a police source.
