Wesley So has won the 79th edition of the prestigious Tata Steel Chess tournament in Wijk aan Zee, the Netherlands, a media report said on Monday.
In the 13th and final round on Sunday the 23-year-old chess player from the US beat Russian Ian Nepomniachtchi with the black pieces. He finished with a total of nine points, Xinhua news agency reported.
Five-time champion Magnus Carlsen from Norway, who won the tournament in 2008, 2010, 2013, 2015 and 2016, ended with 8 points in the second place.
With the white pieces the current World Champion drew against Sergey Karjakin from Russia on Sunday.
