American activist and playwright Eve Ensler Friday met sex workers in Kolkata's Sonagachi, one of Asia's largest red light areas, who sought her support to campaign against legalisation of their profession.

Ensler, best known for the play "The Vagina Monologues", Thursday collaborated with dance movement therapy artists, gender activists and youngsters here to sync with the "One Billion Rising" campaign.

On Friday, she interacted with members of the marginalised community who narrated their tales of abuse in brothels and how they faced it, said a release attributed to an NGO - Apne Aap Women Worldwide.

The sex workers asked her to join their campaign against the legalisation of pimping, brothel keeping, recruitment and other activities that promote prostitution, said the release.

The survivor-activists sat in a circle with the American playwright, sharing stories of beatings and abuse by pimps and brothel keepers and how they found the courage to overcome it.

The programme ended with a skit and flash dance on the streets of Sonagachi.

"The girls and women are reclaiming the streets of Sonagachi through their dance. They are asking the world to make all streets safe, not just streets for upper class and upper caste girls," Apne Aap Women Worldwide founder Ruchira Gupta said.

"They are demanding solidarity from One Billion Rising and Eve," said Gupta.
