Forget military helicopters or life boats when a natural calamity strikes. A Japanese firm is on the job to build an all-electric, floating car that can reach low-lying, flood-prone regions in a jiffy.

Named 'Concept One', the vehicle from Japanese company Fromm would have a water jet generator to propel it through water-covered roads.

"The idea to build such a vehicle came after the company's president Hideo Tsurumaki saw the tsunami devastation that hit Japan in 2011," said a report in Grist.

The car would have to be fully charged. It would also need to be in a location that already has electric vehicle charging infrastructure, the report added.

It would be a small car that, in the case of an emergency, would help one or two other people lift from the affected area.

It would go for commercial production in 2015, Fromm added.
