A South African soccer referee has been charged with perjury and corruption related to lower-league promotion play-offs.

Clifford Malgas, Thursday appearing in a Soweto court, was allegedly involved in match-fixing, Xinhua reported.

National team assistant coach Phil Setshedi was sentenced to 36 months in jail last year for the same scandal.

Claims of lower-league corruption are common in the host country of the 2010 World Cup as clubs promoted to the top tier bank at least 115,000 euros each month.
