The presidents of a group of football clubs have asked the South American Football Confederation (Conmebol) for more transparency and income from television rights.

"It was a very productive meeting. I would categorize it as a historic meeting both for the clubs and for Conmebol," Xinhua quoted Jorge Barrera, the delegate for Montevideo side Penarol, as saying on Monday.

The presidents of 15 teams from Argentina, Chile, Peru and Uruguay attended the meeting. Boca Juniors, River Plate, Universidad Catolica and Universidad de Chile were among the represented teams.

These clubs are looking for "transparency and more resources," Barrera said on Monday.

The clubs have asked Conmebol to treble the prizes available for participating in the continental tournaments and they have also asked for "reparations" for the money diverted due to corruption within Conmebol, added Barrera.

The last three presidents of the Conmebol - Nicolas Leoz, Eugenio Figueredo and Juan Angel Napout - are accused of participating in a multi-million dollar corruption scheme for selling the television rights to tournaments organised by the football entity.
