Bursting fire crackers is harmful not only to humans but also to pets who have a heightened sense of hearing and feel terrorised by the never ending loud noises on Diwali. Experts suggest keeping pets indoors.
NGO Humane Society International offers a few tips to keep your pets safe. Experts here suggest pets be kept indoors in a familiar room so that they do not run away in search of a safe haven.
"As pets have a heightened sense of hearing, the loud noises cause many animals to flee in search of safe haven. So all doors and windows should be kept closed and curtains drawn to reduce the noise," said N.G.Jayasimha, the NGO's managing director.
Pet owners are also advised to store fireworks in a closed box out of the reach of pets.
"As every year animal shelters report a dramatic increase in pets, people should also refrain from bursting firecrackers near an animal shelter or zoo as noise can cause panic and fear," added Jayasimha.
Further, if the pet is prone to acute anxiety attacks or distress from loud noises, veterinary doctors should be consulted.
"In case the animal suffers from burns, a bucket full of water should be kept ready. Also keep the contact information of municipal corporations and surrounding shelters handy in case the pet runs away," Jayasimha added.
