Actor Steve Carell is in talks to join the ensemble of "Minecraft", a big-screen adaptation of the popular video game.

Rob McElhenney is on board to direct the film. McElhenney also penned the latest draft with "Wonder Woman" scribe Jason Fuchs.

The Oscar-nominated actor is currently in negotiation stage to board Warner Bros.' big-screen adaptation of the popular cube-centric videogame, which was reportedly the second best-selling game of all time, reports variety.com.

The studio acquired film rights to the video game franchise in February from Swedish developer Mojang AB. The pic will be directed by Rob McElhenney, who also co-wrote the latest draft with Jason Fuchs ("Pan", "Ice Age: Continental Drift").

Roy Lee ("The LEGO Movie") will produce via his Vertigo Entertainment production company along with Jill Messick ("Mean Girls").

Details about Carell's role and the movie are still kept under wraps. Meanwhile, in the game, which was launched in 2009, players are allowed to create their own avatars and build an environment using textured cubes in a 3D world as they battle nocturnal monsters.
