Hundreds of travellers on Delhi Metro's busy Jahangirpuri-HUDA City Centre line had a harrowing time Tuesday morning with services disrupted for nearly two hours after a train broke down in a tunnel. Normality has now been restored on the route, an official said.

Passengers, including children and women, were stuck inside the train for around 20 minutes as it stalled in a tunnel between Central Secretariat and Udyog Bhawan Metro stations around 9.45 a.m. due to a technical snag.

The passengers were evacuated through the emergency exit.

"Passengers present in the snag-hit train were evacuated by opening emergency exit in front and back of the train. The passengers had to walk few metres inside the tunnel to reach the nearby Central Secretariat Metro station," a Delhi Metro official told IANS.

Metro rail raffic was also affected in direction of the HUDA City Centre due to the stuck train, which was removed at 11 a.m.

"The Metro technical teams rectified the problem and the train was run at a restricted speed and taken to Green Park Metro station," Delhi Metro official added.

However, the break-down caused major delays in the running of the trains and stranded thousands of commuters for hours on the line between Jahangirpuri to HUDA City Centre in Gurgaon.

"The train service were halted for about two hours because of the train that had broken down. Thankfully the air conditioner and lights inside the train were working," Umesh Jha, a commuter stuck in the train, told IANS.

Metro officials said the trains in the parallel tunnel on the route were running as per schedule.
