German football giants Borussia Dortmund sacked head coach Peter Bosz on Sunday and replaced him with Peter Stöger.

"Borussia Dortmund have today ended their cooperation with head coach Peter Bosz and appointed Peter Stöger as his successor. Hans Joachim Watzke, the Chief Executive Officer, cited the club's current sporting plight as the reason behind the decision," Borussia Dortmund said in a statement.

The 51-year-old Stoger earlier served FC Köln before being sacked on December 3, earlier this year.

"Last night (Saturday), we decided in a meeting with Peter Bosz that he will immediately be released. It was very emotional, but classy. And Bosz took it with class," Dortmund CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke was quoted saying by ESPNFC.

"I would like to thank him in the name of everyone here at the club. We still believe he is a very good coach, and an outstanding personality. The cooperation was outstanding. And we would like to thank him for that."

The Dutch coach got off to a flying start with 19 points from their first seven matches but completely collapsed after that managing just three draws from their last eight Bundesliga games.

Sporting director Michael Zorc added: "I saw how intensely he tried to achieve the turnaround. It did not work out. And thus it was inevitable."
