A US Senate Committee has dropped the subpoena against Paul Manafort, former head of the presidential campaign of Donald Trump, who was to testify on Wednesday as part of the investigation into the alleged Russian interference in the 2016 elections.
Manafort's lawyers were negotiating a closed-door meeting between the two parties and exchanges of information with the members of the Senate Judiciary Committee, Efe news reported.
Manafort, in fact, had already met with the Senate Intelligence Committee on Tuesday which was also looking into the Russian plot. The Senate Judiciary Committee wanted both Manafort and Trump's eldest son to appear at a public hearing Wednesday.
While Trump Jr's attorneys agreed with the committee to meet behind closed doors, Manafort's refusal to collaborate led to him being subpoenaed, which was finally dropped.
The committee is interested in the testimony of Manafort and Trump Jr since the two met a Russian lawyer in June 2016 hoping to receive compromising information on then-Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton.
That meeting is the most tangible public proof of a possible collusion between the Kremlin and the tycoon's presidential campaign in the White House elections, said the report.
