Rebel Sudan People's Liberation Movement (SPLM)/northern sector on Friday claimed to have killed 25 government soldiers in battles that took place between its troops and the Sudanese army in South Kordofan State.

"The SPLM troops in the Nuba mountains region of South Kordofan on Friday ambushed a government force that was on its way to support another government force surrounded inside Al-Azraq area in South Kordofan state," Arno Taloudy, spokesman of the SPLM/northern sector, said in a statement.

He said 25 soldiers of the government force were killed and the rest fled towards Khor Al-Dalaib and al-Rahmaniya areas, adding that the movement lost one soldier, Xinhua reported.

He said his movement destroyed two equipped vehicles and confiscated arms and ammunition.

The SPLM/northern sector has been fighting the central government at Blue Nile and South Kordofan areas since 2011.

Kordofan State includes most of the Sudanese oil reserve, while the Blue Nile state enjoys a strategic geographical location, and is rich of natural resources. It is also home to Al-Rusaires, the biggest electricity dam in Sudan.
