As the Jammu-Srinagar highway has been damaged at several places following heavy rainfall, an alternate route will now be used to bring essential supplies to the valley.

The Kashmir Valley is facing an acute shortage of essential commodities following the closure of the 300-km long Jammu-Srinagar highway.

Though some portions of the highway have been restored for traffic, there are still badly damaged stretches at Ramsu, according to a police officer in Jammu.

The government has decided to use an alternate road link between Jammu and Srinagar via Kishtwar through Sinthan Top to bring in the much needed supplies to the valley.

On Saturday, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah assessed the progress of relief and rescue operations in the flood-affected areas of south Kashmir.
