The AAP on Monday urged the Election Commission to tally votes cast through EVMs with Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) in the Bawana assembly by-election in Delhi whenever it is held.

The seat fell vacant after Aam Aadmi Party legislator Ved Prakash resigned and joined the BJP in March. As per the rules, the by-election to the seat -- one of the 12 Reserved constituencies in Delhi -- has to be held within six months.

A VVPAT machine generates a paper slip after a person has cast his vote through the Electronic Voting Machine, which has details of the candidate to whom the vote has gone.

The Election Commission had earlier decided to tally the EVM votes with VVPAT in five per cent of the election booths, selected at random in every assembly seat.

"The Aam Aadmi Party urges the Election Commission to use the EVMs with VVPAT machines for the Bawana by-election and thus implement its decision of counting and tallying of paper trails in five per cent of the booths," a July 24 letter written by AAP leader Ashutosh to Chief Election Commissioner reads.
