The telephone links in the flood-affected areas of Jammu and Kashmir are expected to be restored in a day or two, Minister of State in the Prime Minister's Office Jitendra Singh said Wednesday.

"I am in touch with the state administration and also maintaining a regular individual contact with the deputy commissioners of the affected districts. The breakdown of communication and telephone links are expected to be restored in a day or two," Singh said in a statement.

Reassuring the relatives of those stranded in the flood-hit regions of the state, he said there was "no need to panic".

Singh, who is a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP from Udhampur in Jammu and Kashmir, said he has also taken up the issue of providing more relief material with the ministry of home affairs and the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA).

"So far, over 76,500 people have been rescued by the armed forces and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), while the remaining are also in the process of being shifted out from the places where they are held up," he said.

Jammu and Kashmir is witnessing the worst floods in over 50 years with thousands still trapped inside their houses even as the the water level of the Jhelum river receded Wednesday.
