Siddarth Gowda staved off a strong challenge from his Karnataka team mate Varun Venkat to prevail at 7-5, 0-6, 6-4 in a first round tie of the KTPPA-National Series Under-16 tennis tournament here Monday.
Top seed C. Vasisht had it easy against another Karnataka player, Rahul Shankar 6-0, 6-1 and moved into the second round. Eighth seed Vignesh Subrmanaya also made it to the second round with facile win.
In the girls singles, all the seeded players received a first round bye and the local girls who made it to the second round with well-earned wins included Prarthana Prabhakar, N.P. Prathiba, N.P. Pragathi, Sonashe Bhatnagar and Chelsea Stephen.
