Three youth were killed in Uttar Pradesh's Muzaffarnagar district in a clash following an incident of a girl's harassment, police said. The incident created tension in the area and a heavy police contingent was deployed.
The incident took place in the Jansath area of Muzaffarnagar, 495 km from here, when a youth was caught harassing a girl. Her brother and his friend bashed up the alleged molestor and shot him dead, but were themselves lynched by a mob.
Muzaffarnagar's Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Manjil Saini told IANS that Sachin, a resident of Malakpura village was told by his sister hat a boy named Shahnawaz was harrasing her.
Enraged at this, he, along with a friend, attacked Shahnawaz with a knife and later shot him. As the two tried to flee the crime scene, they were overpowered by the villagers and were beaten to death.
With the news of the killings spreading in the area, people from both sides attacked each other and police reinforcements were rushed to the village.
After great difficulty, police managed to take possession of the three dead bodies and bring the situation under control.
The bodies have been sent for post-mortem while Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC) personnel have been deployed in the village.
