Tokyo shares opened higher on Wednesday, with the Nikkei index up over 2 per cent for a moment, on strong US stocks overnight and a weaker yen.
As of 9:15 a.m., the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average rose 261.16 points, or 1.62 per cent, from Tuesday to 16,356.81.
The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange was up 22.02 points, or 1.71 per cent, to 1,307.75.
Every industry category on the main section except miscellaneous product and food issues gained ground. Notable gainers included insurance, mining and security issues.
