Tokyo stocks rose sharply on Wednesday, with the Nikkei index gaining more than 600 points following overnight gains on Wall Street and Shanghai stocks on Tuesday.
At 9.15 a.m., the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average was up 619.29 points, or 3.55 percent, from Tuesday to 18,046.37, Xinhua news agency reported.
The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange soared 48.79 points, or 3.44 percent, at 1,465.50.
Every industry category on the main section gained ground, with gainers led by pharmaceuticals, oil and coal products and rubber products.
