The Ghaziabad administration on Monday admitted that collectors at the Dasna toll bridge here were charging more than what they were permitted to from vehicles.
The toll plaza is situated 27 km from Delhi on National Highway 24 in Ghaziabad district.
"Our office is flooded with complaints. Being located in the city, commuters feel harassed by paying toll for their frequent travel, that too when they are deprived of the discounted rates," Sub-Divisional Magistrate Praveen Ranjan Singh said.
It has been alleged that the toll collectors charged double the prescribed fee on locally registered vehicles of all categories.
They also had not displayed the rates for locally registered vehicles at the site. The toll collectors were also accused of charging haphazardly, at their whim and fancy.
The problem erupted on Sunday when BJP MLA Dalbeer Singh confronted the toll collectors over the legality of their operations. The collectors fled the spot, allowing motorists to pass through without paying money for two hours.
