At least six people were killed and 12 injured when a train rammed into a car crossing a rail track near New York, authorities said.
The dead included the driver of the car and five people on board the train, Xinhua reported.
The accident took place about an hour after the Metro-North train, packed with passengers, left the Grand Central Station in New York at 5.45 p.m.
The train dragged the car for nearly 140 meters along the track. The front portion of the train burst into flames.
The car also caught fire following the collision.
Passengers from the first three coaches of the train were evacuated.
