The triple talaq issue is not related to religion but social reform, Union Minister of State for Minority Affairs Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi said here on Tuesday, adding that the Modi government would discuss with all political parties on framing a law on the matter.
Naqvi welcomed the decision of the Supreme Court that banned instant divorce.
The Supreme Court on Tuesday held triple talaq being practised by the Muslim community as "unconstitutional", "arbitrary" and "not part of Islam". A five judge constitutional bench by a 3:2 majority judgement said there is no constitutional protection for triple talaq.
"We should not adopt a rigid attitude, we should adopt a reformist approach towards social evil. From the last about two years, there was a national debate on this issue. The Narendra Modi government always favours gender equality," Naqvi said.
The Minister said the central government will talk to all political parties on framing a law on this issue.
He said the Modi government was against this "social evil" from the beginning and added that earlier too reforms were implemented on the practice of Sati and child marriage.
