Tripura's ruling Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) will organise rallies across the state Aug 7 to protest the "violence and terror in West Bengal", a party leader said here Friday.

"As part of the party's country-wide campaign to save democracy and to defeat the violence and terror in West Bengal, the CPI-M would hold protest rallies in Tripura," CPI-M Tripura state committee secretary Bijan Dhar told reporters.

Dhar, also a CPI-M central committee member, said: "The rallies would inform people about the murder of democracy in West Bengal and mobilise support to demand a halt to the violence and terror."

He said that the CPI-M politburo had earlier appealed to all democratic forces in the country to condemn the Trinamool Congress's violent activities to suppress the Left Front and the opposition parties in West Bengal.

"A large number of CPI-M leaders and workers were killed in the panchayat elections (concluded Thursday). Despite directives from the Supreme Court, the high court and the State Election Commission, the state government did not take appropriate steps to hold polls freely and fairly," the Marxist leader said.
