Two Uttar Pradesh police officials were suspended on Monday after a woman accused them of setting her on fire after a failed attempt to rape her at a police station.
The woman, aged 40, was admitted in a Lucknow hospital with serious burn injuries.
The woman said she met the officials - station house officer Rai Saheb Yadav and sub-inspector Akhilesh - at the police station in Barabanki district on Sunday to enquire about her husband who had been detained.
She told senior officials that when she pleaded with Yadav and Akhilesh that her husband was innocent, they tried to rape her. When she raised an alarm, they doused her with kerosene and set her on fire.
The woman was reportedly rescued by her son and taken to hospital.
Lucknow Inspector General of Police Zaki Ahmad told IANS that the two officials had been suspended and an investigation ordered into the woman's allegations.
