Two guerrillas of the militant outfit Hizbul Mujahideen were killed in the gunfight with security forces in Jammu and Kashmir's Shopian district Thursday evening, said a defence spokesman.
"Based on intelligence inputs from police regarding presence of militants hiding in Pinjora village of Shopian, a joint operation was launched by troops of Rashtriya Rifles (RR) and special operations group (SOG) of Shopian police which resulted in the elimination of two hard core HM militants," spokesman, Lt. Col. N.N. Joshi told IANS here.
He said the inputs said militants were hiding in a shed near Drallbagh orchard in village Pinjora, 60 km from here, and the security forces reached the spot and cordoned off the area.
"Subsequently troops came under heavy volume of fire from militants, and during the ensuing firefight, two militants were gunned down. The militants are from the Hizbul Mujahideen and have been identified as Arshad Ahmed alias Ashraf and Shabir Gujjar, both actively operating in the area since last more than two years," he said
"Chinar Corps commander Lt.Gen.Gurmit Singh has commended the professional manner in which the operation was executed and lauded the excellent synergy exiting between the army and J&K police which resulted in this operational success," said Lt.Col. Joshi.
