The mortal remains of two troopers, who were killed along with four others of 29 Assam Rifles in an ambush in Manipur, were brought to their villages in Himachal Pradesh and cremated on Wednesday, officials said.
Subedar Baldev Sharma of Maruda village near Shahtalai in Bilaspur district and rifleman Bhupender Kumar of Gohar in Mandi district were among the six who were killed when their convoy was ambushed in Manipur on May 22.
Both the soldiers were cremated with full military and state honours in their villages. A large number of people joined in the cremation, a government spokesperson told IANS.
Local Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) legislator Rikhi Ram Kaundal attended the funeral of Baldev Sharma, while member of parliament Ram Swaroop Sharma and legislators Jairam Thakur and Vinod Kumar participated in the funeral of Bhupender Kumar.
Governor Acharya Devvrat and Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh expressed grief over the death of the troopers.
