Uttar Pradesh Home Secretary Sarvesh Chandra Mishra was transferred and another official suspended over the Ram temple letter issue, the state's Principal Secretary (Home) R.M. Srivastava said Saturday.

While Mishra was transferred and put on wait mode, a section officer in the home department, Prem Kumar Pandey, was suspended over the letter, which talked about calling a meeting of officials to discuss the construction of a Ram temple at Ayodhya, the officer said.

The government action comes in the wake of what was termed a "typographical error" that caused huge embarrassment to Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav and his government.

The letter from the home department issued by Mishra spoke of a meeting to be held in Lucknow with police and administrative officials to discuss the "construction of the Ram temple on the lines of the Somnath temple in Gujarat".

As the letter found its way to the media, the opposition pounced on the Samajwadi Party government and accused it of conniving with communal forces.
