Two persons were arrested on Monday for allegedly threatening Odisha's Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) President Basant Panda by brandishing "guns" at him at the party office here.

Panic gripped the party office when two youths, who claimed to be BJP workers, barged into Panda's party office chamber and intimidated him using 'toy weapons' in the presence of other party leaders.

The police confirmed that the "guns" were actually "cigarette lighters". The police has detained the two for interrogation and later arrested them.

"The two youths had come to the office yesterday seeking help for treatment of one of their kin. I had told them to come with concerned documents. However, they came today and threatened me with two guns without holding discussion about the help they had sought earlier," said the BJP President.

Panda added the two are not BJP workers, in contradiction to what they were claiming. Someone might have staged the whole act intentionally, he said.

"We are interrogating them and have seized their firearms. The two have been arrested for terrorising the state BJP president. Further investigation is on," Kharvel Nagar, Inspector in-charge Anup Kanungo said.
