Abu Dhabi, March 23 (IANS/WAM) The United Arab Emirates (UAE) Red Crescent has come for praise for its work in providing fresh water in its water-well drilling project in India.

Sheikh Abu-Bakr Ahmed, secretary-general of the Scholars Association in India, in a statement on the occasion of World Water Day that was observed March 22, expressed his sincere thanks and appreciation to the UAE for the work done by the UAE Red Crescent in this regard not only in India but in other countries in need as well.

He said that the UAE Red Crescent Authority, in collaboration with the Relief and Charitable Foundation of India, RCFI, drilled 1,710 wells in various states of India, including Gujarat, Kashmir, Karnataka, West Bengal, Bihar, Kerala and Tamil Nadu with the adoption of modern technologies benefitting tens of thousands of poor families living in a difficult environment.

He added that the population of West Bengal has benefitted most from the project since there is little clean water due to exposure to environmental pollution. He pointed out that there are about 755 wells under construction which are expected to be completed within months.

Sheikh Abu-Bakr explained that the issue of providing fresh water was a global challenge which could not be fully addressed without joint efforts of all stakeholders together. He said that the UAE Red Crescent Authority was an example of a model in the face of this challenge.
