Geneva, June 22 (IANS/MAP) The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has welcomed the decision by Morocco to admit a group of Syrian refugees stranded at the countrys border with Algeria.
"The UNHCR welcomes this humanitarian gesture, which is in keeping with the traditions of hospitality demonstrated by countries across the region," the UN agency said in a statement on Wednesday.
The refugees were picked up by the Moroccan police from the border and were transported to Bouarfa, from where they were transferred to Morocco's capital Rabat.
The UNHCR is working with the authorities of Morocco and other countries to find a durable solution to the plight of these vulnerable refugees, the statement said.
It added that since April 17, the UNHCR has been working to find a solution for the Syrian refugees stranded at the border between the two countries.
