A young, unwed mother and three other people were arrested Sunday for killing a newborn baby girl in West Bengal's Howrah district, police said.
The killing of the new-born took place in Mali Panchghara in the district, seven km from Kolkata.
The suspects were arrested from near Howrah railway station.
"We arrested four people, including the mother of the child. The unmarried woman gave birth to the child in the early hours of Sunday. There are strangulation marks on the baby's neck. It seems she was strangulated before being abandoned. We are probing all aspects," police said.
The baby was found lying motionless on the roadside by morning walkers who informed the police. After questioning people, police learnt about the four people who had abandoned the baby and arrested them.
