Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Dinesh Sharma on Friday visited a number in villages in Agra, where more than 50 people died and around 60 were injured in Wednesday thunderstorm, and distributed compensation, officials said.

Sharma visted various villages in Khairagarh and Fatehabad tehsils to meet members of bereaved families and distributed cheques.

In the afternoon, he visited the SN Medical College hospital to meet the injured and promised all help from the state government. Treatment and medicines are free, hospital authorities said.

Sharma said earlier it took months for compensation to be distributed to the victims, but the BJP government has ensured there was prompt relief and cheques be distributed without delay. Those recorded as farmers will get additional Rs 5 lakh, and those killed due to power lines snapping would be adequately compensated by the Electricity Department, he added.

Local MLAs and MPs accompanied the Deputy Chief Minister.

District authorities said that Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath was likely to land in Agra directly from Karnataka where he was campaigning for the BJP for the May 12 assembly elections. He would on Saturday visit affected areas and meet victims.
