Uttar Pradesh's Karhal town in Mainpuri district was tense but peaceful on Saturday, a day after it witnessed violence following rumours that a cow had been killed.
Chandra Pal Singh, district magistrate of Mainpuri, told IANS: "The situation is under control, and life was back to normal."
He said 19 people have so far been arrested and cases have been filed against 250 unidentified accused.
The DIG of Agra said on Saturday that miscreants were being identified and would be booked soon.
More than 500 villagers gathered in the market of Karhal town on Friday afternoon and went on a rampage for nearly five hours, incensed by rumours news that a cow had been killed.
They torched vehicles, pelted stones and damaged properties.

Authorities had to resort to bursting tear gas shells to disperse them.
The mob caught hold of two alleged culprits and beat them up. Police had to intervene to rescue the two.
