US Ambassador to India Richard R. Verma visited Amritsar on Wednesday and paid his respects at Shri Harmandir Sahib, commonly known as the Golden Temple, the spiritual centre of the Sikh faith.

Taking part in a traditional 'langar', he served food to worshippers in the temple's community kitchen.

Verma also visited Jallianwala Bagh, the site of the infamous massacre of 1919, and said that the memorial is a "vivid reminder" that the price for freedom is often high.

The ambassador ended the day with a visit to the Wagah-Attari border.

Verma also visited Maharaja Ranjit Singh Museum, a tribute to the great 19th century ruler who was known as the Lion of Punjab.

Reflecting on the visit, Verms said: "Amritsar is a vibrant and exciting city. My father and mother came from Punjab and it gives me great pride to see and experience with my family these important parts of our shared heritage."
