A US bound flight on Monday made an emergency landing at Sydney's International Airport after striking a bird shortly after take-off.

United Airlines Boeing 787 Dreamliner bound for Los Angeles departed around 9.40 a.m. (local time).

The flight was forced to turn back to Sydney a short time later. No one on board was injured, Xinhua news agency reported.

The plane dumped fuel out to sea under an emergency procedure and "landed under its own might" around 40 minutes later, an Airservices Australia spokesperson said.

"Our firefighters and rescue unit were on standby and ready to respond when needed," another spokeswoman said.

The incident was reported to Sydney tower as a bird strike, with the pilots having concerns over damage to the aircraft.
