A US citizen was Friday stabbed by an unidentified assailant near the American embassy in Cairo, state-run Ahram Online news website reported Friday.

Chris Stone, an associate professor of Arabic and head of the Arabic Program at the City University in New York, was recently appointed by the American University in Cairo as head of the US-based Center for Arabic Study Abroad.

It was not clear whether the American was alive or dead.

The motive is not known, but the report said the man "appears to have been targeted for being American", Xinhua said.

The suspect has been arrested.
