A US soldier was mysteriously found dead Tuesday outside his apartment in a Texas military post Tuesday just days after he returned from West Africa, media reported.

The soldier's body was found Tuesday morning in the front yard of his home in Fort Hood, a US military post located in Killeen, central Texas, Xinhua reported citing ABC13.

The soldier, along with a group of more than 80 troops, returned to Texas Jan 7 after spending time in Liberia on a mission to help contain Ebola, a virus with a high fatality rate that was first recognised in Africa in 1976. He was self-monitoring under established guidelines, but he was reportedly not showing any sign of Ebola.

"He was allowed to leave, but he had to self-monitor himself and send those results in twice a day," Fort Hood spokesman Tyler Broadway said, adding that a Killeen police department was on the scene.

Army medical officials will conduct tests to see if the soldier was exposed to Ebola and results might come later Tuesday night.

Ebola virus has currently resulted in more than 21,000 suspected cases and 8,371 confirmed deaths in the world, according to the World Health Organization.
