The US will continue sanctions on some sectors of Myanmar based on the country's democracy development, visiting US Secretary of State John Kerry said on Sunday in a joint press conference with his Myanmar counterpart Aung San Suu Kyi.
He said the US has eased some sanctions on Myanmar recently to mark its support for the new government. However, sanctions are to be maintained on some sectors as "some persons' undertakings need to be changed", Xinhua news agency reported.
Expressing willingness to help Myanmar in democracy and foreign investment, the US official said in 2012, the US government has funded over $12 million to the civil society organisations for the sake of peace and national reconciliation.
At the press conference, Aung San Suu Kyi reiterated that Myanmar does not fear US sanctions which was imposed previously under certain status, believing that these sanctions would one day be totally lifted in the future.
